Brown Sugar (2002)
Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan
"You're the perfect verse over a tight beat"
FINALLYYY came around to watching Brown Sugar. A movie intricately wrapped around hip hop being personified to portray love between two life-long friends. In my opinion, it's amazing how you can't even compare these "white-girl" chick flicks to a classic like this. Really the truth is, I enjoyed this movie mainly because of the plot. It's that true genuine hip hop love. Wanting to conserve it's essence in a pure form. I'll be honest, kinda want one of those stories of my own.I mean, who's gonna chill on a park bench with me and finish the verse to Common's "I used to love H.e.r." Haha there goes my fave scene.Sanaa Lathan's character Syd said this line in the film which captivated me:
“So what’s the difference between rap and hip hop? It’s simple. It’s like sayin’ you love somebody and bein’ in love with somebody. Rap is only a word.”
Here's the opening scene from the flick where a couple familiar faces tell you about their hip hip love story...

I personally always flirted with Hip Hop, back in the days maybe around 6 or 7 listening to my sister's Aaliyah, Outkast and The Fugees albums in the car early 90s. Little did I know what I was gettin' into huh? I truly fell in love with Hip Hop When I heard Nas' "It Ain't Hard To Tell" (illmatic, 1994) a few years ago, that's when we took it serious and went official. Today we're happily married, although I miss it's old ways, Hip Hop always manages to take me back to a blissful, lyrical and rhythmical state. Art in it's purest baby. So no matter whatever happens to you...to the love of my life hip hop. I loved you, I still do...and I always will.
So I ask you fellow solo or sola, you know my hip hop love story... whats yours?
When did you fall in Love with Hip Hop?
