VLS ACT II: The Why

So after you discovered that passion, after you've let it all sink in. Have you thought about the WHY of what you do? That is, why you do what you do...

You choose to dedicate part of your life to something, you gotta have a reason for it and not say that it's because you love it or because it feels right. Because I can sit here and tell you that I do graffiti because I love it, but I also love cookies...  is that my passion too? *cue the crickets* Nahhh. Take a minute, think it through.

The purpose of this post is not frustrate you, it's actually about finding the root that makes you who you are. This day and age we are so quick to throw the sentence "I don't know" out there that its lost it's value... Heck, it's even insulting those who are actually clueless and who really don't know. You do know, the answer is always within you, but you need time to think about it. Stop being chill with the automatic forfeit that is the "I don't know" response. Why do you do what you do? Why do you love it and why is it your passion? We are trained these days to inquire so much less because we are content with the lack of self-discovery we have. It even seems that we don't even like certain things because we personally like them, we like them because the mass appeal likes them. Excuse my french but, what in the actual f*ck? See what I mean? Why do you love what you love? THINK ABOUT IT.

Personally, why do I like Graffiti... Hmm. One of my teachers threw this line at me in college and left a permanent tag in my mind. He asked me why do some people see it as an eyesore and why do you see it as art? Mind you this was a good 3 years ago and I still haven't completed my response, but every day I find myself answering part of it, getting closer to completing my answer. I guess some see it as an eyesore because they hold a strong sentimental value to buildings and public property and I get that, it's perspective. We can battle back and forth trying to figure out if its art or vandalism, but that is not why I love graffiti...

If I really think about it, it stems back to me as a kid in the back seat when my mom would drive on  the highway and I would see nothing but bombers and throws and just wonder how the fuck someone got up there, or WHY... Why would someone put their life at risk for something like this? Then I got older and understood the game, what it was truly about. Recognition. Leaving your mark so you'd never be forgotten, perfecting your skill and sharing it with the world (whether you wanna see it or not).

In the generation of today where almost everything has gone digital, we have no tangible reassurance of anything really... If the net were to get wiped out, heck this blog would be history and id be forgotten. Everything we've ever posted would disappear. But Graffiti... nah. Graffiti remains. How is it that we are still talking about hieroglyphs today?  Because those egyptians left their marks and their messages. As much as we can claim we are able to decipher them, nobody will ever really know but the person who put those messages there. And the scientists who tries to decipher those hierglyphs.... well, they are just like that little girl I was in the backseat of that car once. I guess that's my reason so far. It's still developing as I learn something new about it on the daily. But someone who is willing to put their lives and freedom on the line to express themselves is someone who gets all of my respect. Authorities can tell us to sit back stay quiet and join them all we want, but we aint fallin for that... We don't wanna be forgotten. Choosing to leave something on earth that will make you immortal even after you perish. Thats why I do what I do, to remain immortal.

Pow.
